The history of France
The region where today is located in France appears in western history with the presence of the Greeks at Massilia (today Marseille), found there in 600 BC the Celts, who occupied since the beginning of the eighth century before the Christian era. In 121 BC, Roman rule begins to extend over the territory of Gaul called, that this power is consolidated by Julius Caesar in his successful campaign conducted between 57 and 52 BC At that time, the Roman general defeated the rebel forces led by chief Vercingetorix Gallic and started the division in the provinces of Gaul under Roman control. Over three centuries, barbaric Gauls and Latins forged Gallic-Roman civilization. With the Romanization of the region, Latin was adopted as the local language. However, Celtic culture has remained rooted in the customs of the people.
From the second half of the third century of the Christian Era, and Franks Alamanni tribes beyond the Roman fortifications on the Rhine and began to settle in Gaul. The Germanic tribe of the Franks probably originated in the Pannonian region (located in present-day Hungary). In the mid-fourth century, the Roman Emperor Julian ceded Gaul to the Franks, integrating them into the Empire as allies federated. With this act, Julian wanted to alleviate the constant friction involving the Franks. Modern French borders are very close to the borders of ancient Gaul.
France is among the protagonists of some key events in human history, such as feudalism, the Crusades, the Renaissance and the expansion of commercialism after the great discoveries.
